For the first time since entering commercial operation in 2014, Atucha II Nuclear Power Plant achieved a score of 100 points on the PI Index of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) for the second quarter of 2026.
Meanwhile, Embalse Nuclear Power Plant achieved a score of 98.4 points, less than two points below the maximum. These results place the nuclear power plants operated by Nucleoeléctrica among the best-performing facilities in the international nuclear industry.
“These results reflect the experience, commitment and technical capabilities of our teams. The excellence achieved in the operation of our nuclear power plants also provides a strong foundation for bringing Nucleoeléctrica’s expertise to new markets and helping Argentina’s nuclear sector generate greater value, foreign currency and high-quality employment for the country,” said Juan Martín Campos, President of Nucleoeléctrica.
The PI Index is a tool used by WANO to assess and compare the performance of nuclear power plants in operation on a quarterly basis. With this result, Atucha II ranks among the top-performing plants across the 383 nuclear power plants that are part of the association.
The index combines multiple aspects of plant operation into a single score, including worker safety, personnel radiation protection, chemical control of plant systems, equipment reliability and the load factor—the proportion of the energy a plant actually generates compared with the amount it could potentially produce.
Achieving the maximum score requires maintaining all of these parameters at outstanding levels across the indicators evaluated.
Sustained Performance
This achievement builds on the results recorded by both plants throughout 2025. Atucha II and Embalse ended the year with the highest annual electricity generation in their respective histories, producing 5,408,372 megawatt-hours and 5,352,202 megawatt-hours, respectively.
WANO brings together operators of nuclear power plants in operation around the world and assesses their performance using common criteria. This approach allows each plant’s results to be compared with international industry standards while helping identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
For Nucleoeléctrica, these results reinforce the quality of its plant operations and the capabilities the company is currently taking to international markets through the export of services and technical assistance to nuclear operators worldwide.
Exporting Nuclear Services
Nucleoeléctrica’s more than five decades of accumulated experience provide the foundation for a new strategy aimed at expanding the company’s international presence.
The company seeks to transform its capabilities in operations, maintenance, engineering, training and the execution of complex projects into solutions for nuclear power plants and operators in different countries.
This strategy is aimed at generating new projects, partnerships and commercial opportunities that can turn Argentine nuclear expertise into value, foreign currency and skilled employment.
Within this framework, Nucleoeléctrica is advancing the provision of services and technical assistance in international markets, supported by the performance of its nuclear power plants and the extensive experience of its teams.
