International cooperation in nuclear safety: the IAEA visited Atucha to strengthen joint work with Argentina

The Atucha Nuclear Complex hosted a visit on Thursday, March 26 by Karine Herviou, Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Nuclear Safety, Security and Safeguards at the International Atomic Energy Agency, as part of an institutional activity aimed at technical exchange and strengthening international cooperation in nuclear safety.

An Argentine delegation was present, led by the Undersecretary of Nuclear Policies, Eng. Ayelén Giomi; the President of Nucleoeléctrica Argentina, Biochemist Juan Martín Campos; and the President of the Nuclear Regulatory Authority, Dr. Leonardo Sobehart, along with company and regulatory authority officials. They delivered an institutional presentation on the operation of Argentina’s nuclear power plants and the safety and quality policies implemented in the country.

During the visit, the delegation toured Atucha II Nuclear Power Plant, including the control room, turbine building, main transformers, and the river water intake and discharge facilities, where the unit’s main operational features and implemented safety standards were presented.

Subsequently, a working meeting was held with company authorities, during which topics related to the safe operation of nuclear power plants, compliance with International Atomic Energy Agency standards, and continuous improvement actions aimed at strengthening nuclear and physical safety were addressed.

Representatives from the International Atomic Energy Agency also took part in the visit.

The visit is part of the ongoing collaboration between Argentina and the International Atomic Energy Agency to promote the safe and responsible use of nuclear energy, in line with international standards and industry best practices.
